By creating a fleet inventory and updating it on a regular basis, local governments can identify, for example, which vehicles are the least fuel efficient, and develop a plan to replace them with vehicles that serve the same function but are more efficient.
A vehicle fleet efficiency policy sets a fuel-efficiency standard for municipal vehicle acquisitions whenever they are commercially available and practicable. The policy provides vehicle fleet managers with the guidelines and requirements to improve the fuel efficiency of government fleets, thereby reducing fuel costs and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Local governments sometimes have more vehicles than needed in their local government fleets, and larger vehicles are often used for tasks that could be accomplished with smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles. Reducing the size of the fleet reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and decreases overall maintenance and insurance costs.
The Task Force Coordinator is currently assembling energy use data for a Government Operations GHG Inventory, which includes a Fleet Inventory and a measure of fuel usage for each vehicle. In coordination with the County's Fleet MAintenance Committee, the Coordinator has developed a draft Fleet Efficiency Policy which has not yet been adopted. When complete, the Inventory and Efficiency Policy may be used to evaluate the total fleet size and identify possible points of fleet reduction.
