Energy use in buildings is often the largest source of energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within government operations. Points are obtained for this action by conducting level-1, Level-2 or Level-3 audits at one or more local government buildings. Implementation of the recommendations in these audits can lead to points awarded for the following actions:
Convert at least 5% of lighting to LED
Install new HVAC equipment for at least 5% of total building area
Install BEMS for controlling lighting or HVAC in 10% of total building area
Recent energy audits performed for Columbia County government buildings include the main highway garage at 178 Route 23B in Greenport, the public safety building at 85 Industrial Tract Rd in Greenport, the Department of Social Services building at 25 Railroad Ave in Hudson, and the Human Services building at 325 Columbia Street in Hudson.
These audits led to LED lighting upgrades at all four buildings. HVAC systems were upgraded to air-source heat pumps and building energy management systems were installed at the public safety and human services buildings.
Energy efficient upgrades have also been performed (without an audit) at the 560 Warren Street DMV, Real Property, and Treasurer’s office. Upgrades included LED lighting, HVAC equipment, energy efficient windows, and a BEMS.
An investment grade energy audit is currently being performed for the 401 State Street building in Hudson. The county has received a $412,500 Clean Energy Communities grant to implement some of the energy efficiency improvements recommended in this audit.
The 401 State Street building was built as a High School in 1915.
